Objective 11
Identify and describe the variables that produce
conformity and obedience.
Explanation:
My textbook, Psychology the Tenth Edition in Modules, defines conformity as adjusting our behavior or thinking toward some group standard. In my own words conformity is doing what everyone else is doing. There are many variables that produce conformity. Some are feeling incompetent or insecure, being a group with at least three people, admiring a groups status and attractiveness, and being in a group in which everyone else agrees. We conform to avoid rejection and gain social approval. We follow social norms which are understood rules for accepted and expected behavior because there is a price for being different. Obedience is following orders. Some variables that produce obedience are that the person giving orders is close at hand and perceived to be a legitimate authority figure, the authority figure is supported by a prestigious institution, the victim is depersonalized or at a distance, and there are no role models for defiance.

Example:
The picture below shows conformity which is doing what everyone else is doing. All the zebras are the same. It says when people are free to do what they want they usually imitate each other. I see this all the time being in high school; everyone does what everyone else does. You have to conform to fit in.

Example:
I saw this saying in my Chemistry teacher's room this year. I think it tells why conformity and obedience are not always good. Most people do the popular thing to fit in, but it is not always right. On the other hand the right things are not always popular.
