Objective 34
Summarize the
Gestalt principles of perception.
Explanation:
Gestalt is an organized whole. Gestalt psychologists emphasize our tendency to integrate pieces of information into meaningful wholes. One of Gestalt psychologist's favorite sayings is in perception, the whole may exceed the sum of its parts. A house has many different parts like doors, windows, siding, and shingles, but when you look at a house you are not aware of all the parts just its overall appearance.

Example:
The website where I got this picture tells more about the Gestalt principle. In order to interpret what we receive through our senses we attempt to organize information into certain groups. The Gestalt principles of grouping include four types: similarity, proximity, continuity, and closure. Similarity is our tendency to group things together based on how similar they are. In the picture we see two rows of blue dots and two rows of black dots. They are grouped according to similar color. Proximity is our tendency to group things together because of how close they are together. In the picture we perceive three columns of two lines. Continuity is our tendency to see patterns and perceive things as belonging together if they form a continuous pattern. The picture is just a bunch of dots but it looks like an "X" because we perceive the upper left side as continuing all the way to the lower right that the lower left continuing all the way to the upper right. Lastly closure is our tendency to complete objects that have gaps in them. In the picture we perceive a circle and square because we fill in the gaps.

Example:
This picture is a Necker Cube. The individual elements of this figure are eight circles each containing three converging lines. When we see all these elements together we see a cube that sometimes reverses direction. This is a good example of Gestalt psychologist's favorite saying which is in perception, the whole may exceed the sum of its parts.
